PEER2PIER
Rebuild the Pier all the way to the Cross!
On August 27, 2011, Hurricane Irene made its appearance at Don Lee Camp & Retreat Center. Its winds were fast and furious and the waves from the mighty Neuse River were strong and unrelenting as it ripped apart the Don Lee pier. Following the storm, a Don Lee camper was quoted as saying, “On Saturday, August 27th Hurricane Irene blew through Camp Don Lee. It damaged the pier and several other buildings. That means if everything doesn't get repaired, we won't have camp next year. That is why my brother and I are trying to raise money to rebuild Camp Don Lee.” Out of the mouths of babes...
It most certainly is this ministry’s intention to have camp next year, but in order to get these repairs accomplished, as is so important to this camper, we will need your help.
The PEER2PIER campaign is underway to help rebuild the pier that has been so instrumental in the experience of Camp Don Lee for untold numbers of children, youth and adults. The pier signals a pilgrimage of sorts for campers and guests alike whereby time out on the pier above the waters of the Neuse River give pause to God’s creations...where the fresh breezes are felt with great renewal... where stars are gazed upon without obstruction... where seagulls and other creatures of the waters are admired and respected... where solitude meets community and ...where God’s presence is felt about as closely and clearly as anywhere else on earth.
It is the intention of the NC UM Camp & Retreat Ministries to rebuild the pier as a concrete structure so that it will remain steadfast through storms and rough seas and provide a place for that lasting pilgrimage that campers and guests seek. And, in honor of and recognition for the long lasting commitment that Rev. John A. Farmer has given to the ministry at Don Lee, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to name this new, concrete pier the “John A. Farmer Pier” with the cross remaining at the end beckoning all visitors out past the water’s edge.
